For more than a century, the Bargoed YMCA has been a cornerstone of the community, a warm, welcoming place where people of all ages come together. From children’s football clubs and NHS health clinics to social groups and drop-in sessions for older residents, the YMCA has supported generations of local families. Their dedication and kindness have made a lasting difference to the people of Bargoed and beyond. We’re proud to have played a small part in their story, helping them continue their incredible work for the next hundred years and beyond.
“This project isn’t just about clean energy; it’s about helping a community hub thrive for the next generation.” Bradley Wayman, Managing Director
Like many community spaces, the YMCA faced rising energy costs that took funds away from the things that matter most, supporting local people. They wanted to find a way to save money and reduce their carbon footprint, while setting a positive example for the community. By choosing solar, they’re now turning the power of the sun into a force for good. Cutting costs, protecting the planet, and keeping the lights on for everyone who depends on them.
Working together, Smart Energy Homes designed and installed a tailored solar PV system that fits perfectly with the YMCA’s needs and roof layout. Every detail was planned to ensure maximum efficiency and long-term savings.
Main Building System Overview:
Solar Capacity: 12.32kWp array
Panels: 28 panels
Inverters: 10kw hybrid 3 phase inverter
Expected Annual Generation: 8,697.92kw output per year
Estimated CO₂ Reduction: 0.203kg CO2 saved per PV kWh, 2,027tonnes carbon saved per year
This new system will significantly reduce electricity bills, lower carbon emissions, and allow more of the YMCA’s resources to go back into community programmes.
The predicted outcomes for Bargoed YMCA include:
Annual Savings: £1,250 saving in the first year, rising to £3,420 p/y in year
Reductions: 70% energy bill reduction, 0.203kg CO2 saved per PV kWh, 2,027tonnes carbon saved per year
Community Benefit: More funds redirected to programmes supporting local people
This project showcases how renewable energy can directly benefit community organisations – saving money, protecting the planet, and strengthening local impact.
At Smart Energy Homes and Smart Energy Business, we believe every project should make a difference, not just to the planet, but to people. Our Bargoed YMCA installation shows how renewable energy can strengthen communities and support the long-term vision of The Well-being of Future Generations Act 2015.
We were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council and Councillor Andrews to see the project firsthand. Their visit highlights how important this installation is for the borough, showing strong local commitment to sustainability, community spaces, and future-focused investment.
Their support sends a clear message: projects like this matter, not just for cutting carbon, but for protecting the places people rely on every day.
If your organisation wants to cut energy costs and make a positive impact, we’re here to help.
